Solitudes explores the starkness of a coastal vacation town in its off season, when everything is shuttered until the next summer—fisheries, restaurants, and cottages become dead objects in the muted landscape, perfect and serene. In their dormant state they become dreamed objects that stand alone, purged of any human activity, and waiting to be activated again—like a disused movie set—by the return of some sort of choreographed, meaningful activity. The term solitude is not intended as an emotional, human state of being, as in one person, with a camera, alone—it is rather a philosophical condition, describing a perfect and purified state of being, where things are free to be themselves, alone, unbothered, and uncontaminated by the emotional and messy proceedings of human life.
